Ted Smyth

Ted Smyth became an Irish diplomat in 1972 on graduating from Trinity College Dublin with a degree in History and Political Science. Over the next 15 years he served in a number of countries, including as Head of Press at the Embassy of Ireland in London, Senior Advisor to two Taoisigh and in additional diplomatic roles in the United States, Portugal and Switzerland. Ted was a member of the Secretariat of the New Ireland Forum which paved the way for the Anglo Irish Agreement of 1985. In 1988, Ted joined the global food company, HJ Heinz where he became Chief Administrative Officer, directing the senior talent and communication strategy as the company grew around the world. Later he became EVP of McGraw-Hill which included key brands such as Standard & Poor’s. Ted served on the Board of Directors of the Hain Celestial Group from 2004 to 2008. He is a trustee of Glucksman Ireland House at New York University and a trustee of Marlboro College in Vermont. He lives in New York City and New Hampshire with his wife, the writer Mary Breasted.
