International Reporting: Difficult but Absolutely Addictiv
A workday for a journalist seems exciting. Going to a far-flung place, interviewing people, and telling their inspiring stories to an audience of millions. And the most important - having an opportunity to bring forth change by giving a better understanding of the situation. But international journalism has its price. Sometimes reporting means talking to a person on the worst day of their lives. Many who cover difficult areas for news must report on disasters, war zones, riots, humanitarian efforts, military conflicts, and human rights. What price do journalists pay for telling the stories from all around the world?
In this episode, three international journalists across mediums and countries discuss how their experiences affect them. CNN correspondent Melissa Bell, worldwide photojournalist Padraig Grant, and New York Times correspondent Megan Specia tell their most difficult stories from the ground, share their advice on how to protect their mental health, and honestly answer the question of whether they are happy to be journalists.
